Japan Peace Smile Association

Preventing youth suicide and depression by helping young people recognise their own value, build self-esteem, and find places of emotional support

Location:  Tokyo, Japan - with programs in schools, communities, online and youth-support spaces

Mission:

To prevent and ultimately eliminate suicide and depression, especially among young people, by helping them feel that they are valuable, supported, and able to live with hope.

Who we are

Japan Peace Smile Association, also known as JPSA, is a Japanese NPO working mainly on youth suicide prevention, depression prevention, emotional wellbeing, and self-esteem education.

JPSA provides practical programs that help young people experience their own worth, build self-esteem, and feel connected to others. Their work includes workshops, youth events, free learning support, online consultation, and safe third-place spaces for teenagers and students.

Our core approach

JPSA’s work is built around the Peace Smile Method.

The method is based on helping people experience, through dialogue and practical interaction, that they are valuable and worthy. Rather than only teaching about life and self-worth intellectually, the approach helps participants feel their own value and recognise the value of others.

Our activities

  • Youth events and school workshops

    • JPSA runs youth events and workshop-style lessons in schools, from elementary school through university level. These programs help students build confidence, self-esteem, respect for others, and awareness of life and mental health.

  • LINE consultation for teens and students

    • JPSA provides free LINE-based consultation for teens, students, and young people who may not feel able to speak to people around them. Young people can talk about anything from vague worries to suicidal thoughts.

  • Free learning support and youth cafes

    • JPSA operates learning-support and third-place activities for teens and students, including a weekly “peace open cafe” in Takadanobaba and learning support at MUJIcom Musashino Art University Ichigaya Campus.

  • Workplace training and adult education

    • JPSA also provides workplace training related to communication, wellbeing, mental-health prevention, anger management, self-care, diversity, and psychological safety.

The challenges we face

  • Young people are carrying isolation, low self-esteem, and emotional distress

    • Many children today feel stress from school, cram school, and lessons, and that some feel they are not accepted at home or school. They also describe growing isolation and mental-health risk, especially since the pandemic.

  • Support is needed before crisis point

    • JPSA’s focus is prevention. Supporting young people while their hearts are still in a “green light” state, before they move into serious emotional crisis.

  • Safe places and trusted adults are essential

    • JPSA provides places and people who recognise young people’s existence, while also creating growth opportunities that raise self-esteem and motivation to live.
